How to Update a Galaxy S

From time to time, Samsung will release over-the-air (OTA) updates for the Galaxy S that have the ability to correct certain known issues and enhance the user experience. If you should fail to receive the latest OTA update, you can either check for updates directly from your phone or download the newest update manually using the Samsung Kies application.


Steps


Updating from the Phone



  1. Tap on “Menu” from the home screen of your Samsung Galaxy S.





  2. Tap on “Settings.





  3. Scroll to and tap on “About phone.





  4. Scroll to and tap on “Software Update.





  5. Tap on “Check for update. Your phone will automatically search for any available updates.





  6. Select the option to update your phone if an update is available. Samsung will then apply the latest updates to your Samsung Galaxy S.






Updating using Samsung Kies



  1. Navigate to the Samsung Kies download page at http://ift.tt/1fFnqUD on your Windows or Mac computer.





  2. Select the option to download the Samsung Kies app for your Windows or Mac computer as specified in the left sidebar.





  3. Select the option to run the Samsung Kies file at the prompt. The Samsung Kies installation wizard will display on-screen.





  4. Select your language preference and geographical location and click on “Next.





  5. Read and review the license agreement and place a checkmark next to “I accept.





  6. Click on “Next. The Samsung Kies application will begin installing on your computer.





  7. Click on “Finish” when the installation process is complete.





  8. Tap on “Menu” from the home screen of your Samsung Galaxy S.





  9. Tap on “Settings.





  10. Tap on “Applications” and select “USB Settings.





  11. Tap on “Ask on connection.





  12. Tap on the “back” or “Escape” key to return to the Applications menu.





  13. Tap on “Development” and select “USB Debugging.





  14. Tap on the “Home” key to exit Settings. Your phone is now ready to transfer updates from your computer using the Samsung Kies application.





  15. Connect your Samsung Galaxy S to your computer using a USB cable.





  16. Launch the Samsung Kies application on your computer.





  17. Tap on “Samsung Kies” when the option displays on your Samsung Galaxy S. Your phone will begin to check for available software updates using the Samsung Kies application.





  18. Select “Phone Upgrade” on your computer.





  19. Read and review the terms of agreement and place a checkmark next to “I have read and understood.





  20. Click on “Upgrade. Samsung Kies will now download the latest software updates to your Galaxy S.





  21. Click on “OK” when Samsung Kies informs you that the update is complete. Your phone will restart.





  22. Disconnect your Galaxy S from the computer when the Android Home screen displays on your device. Your device will now be updated to the most recent available software version.[1]
