How to Dye Buttons

Change the buttons on your jeans or create a design using a colorful array of buttons by custom coloring your own. Gather new white buttons in good condition and select your color(s). Find a work area that is free from animals or children, as this could get a little messy.

Steps

  1. Prepare the work area. Because you will be working with dye, anything the color comes into contact with could potentially end up permanently dyed.

    • Select old clothing to wear during the craft. Make sure the clothing completely covers your outfit or simply choose clothing that can be damaged or stained.
    • Cover the work surface with the plastic tablecloth. Consider taping the cloth down so that the table isn’t vulnerable to the dye.
    • Examine the floor area. Consider laying a drop cloth on the floor near the work area to avoid damaging the floor should the dye splash.
  2. Prepare the dye in individual plastic bowls. Follow the manufacturer’s directions and possibly make the dye in a larger container and then transfer it to the small bowl (if the directions call for a larger amount of water than what you bowl can hold).

    • Carefully stir with the spoon and be aware of splashing water.
  3. Add buttons to each bowl. Make sure you are wearing the plastic gloves, unless you don't mind dyeing your fingertips. Immerse the buttons into the dye. Allow buttons to sit in the dye (completely covered) for up to two minutes.

    • Check buttons periodically for color. The longer you soak the buttons, the deeper the color.
  4. Remove buttons once desired color has been achieved and rinse. Pour buttons into the strainer and rinse well.

    • Allow buttons to dry on a paper towel or on the plastic tablecloth (in an area that hasn’t been hit with dye).
  5. Wash up using soap and water. Rinse and clean the plastic containers (or simply throw them away) and allow them to air dry. Rinsing will remove excess dye, which could hide and stain other items/clothing.

  6. Finished.

Tips

  • Do not use the buttons until they have completely dried (the color could transfer to other fabric, etc.)
  • Experiment with dying pre-colored buttons. For example, if you have a red button, consider trying to dye it purple.

  • Measuring cup
  • Measuring spoons
  • Disposable plastic containers (enough for each color )
