How to Check Your Windows Version

If you're doing some troubleshooting for your computer, you may need to find what version and build of Windows you are running. This can help others narrow down your problems based on what version you are using. Finding your Windows version, and whether you have a 32-bit operating system or a 64-bit operating system, only takes a minute.

  1. Open the Run box. You can access this from the Start menu, or by pressing .

  2. Open "About Windows". Type and press .

  3. Check your version. Your Windows release will be displayed at the top ("Windows 7", "Windows 8", etc.). In the text beneath the logo will list your version and build number (e.g. "Version 6.3 (Build 9600)").[1]
