How to Plan a Romantic Valentine's Day Date

Want to plan a romantic Valentine’s Day date for your partner or significant other? Make February 14th special by considering the preparations necessary for activities, food, gifts, and any other element that your date might enjoy.

EditSteps

EditDocuments

EditPlanning a Meal

  1. Cook for your date. Add a personal touch to your Valentine’s Day meal and avoid having to make a dinner reservation on this busy holiday. Make a home-cooked meal for your date and invite him or her over to eat with you for an intimate meal.
Plan a Romantic Valentine's Day Date Step 1 Version 2.jpg
    • Make sure you plan out the recipes you want to make so you can get all your ingredients bought and ready ahead of time. It’s always a good idea to get extra, just in case you make a mistake or miscalculate your measurements.
    • Try out a classic heart-shaped dessert like cookies or cake, or give other dishes the same whimsical treatment by cutting or arranging them into classic heart shapes.[1]
    • Avoid really messy foods that could spoil the romantic atmosphere or ruin nice clothes that you and your date might be wearing. Stick to foods you both enjoy, perhaps of a slightly higher quality than you normally eat.
    • Set the mood for your homemade meal by lighting candles, setting up flowers, playing romantic music, using your best cutlery and plates, and any other decorations—if that’s what your date is into!
  2. Make reservations at a restaurant. Call ahead far in advance to reserve a table at a favorite restaurant, or one you’ve never tried but you know your date will love. Use dinner as an occasion to dress up, or just to enjoy some great cuisine and spend time together.
Plan a Romantic Valentine's Day Date Step 2 Version 2.jpg
    • You don’t need your dinner reservation to be at someplace extra fancy or expensive. Choose a burger joint where you shared your first kiss instead of a five-star restaurant with too-small portions—it’s more important that the location is meaningful or sentimental for your date.
    • Try a lunch reservation, or a time earlier or later than a typical dinner, to avoid the busy dinner rush that most restaurants will have on the holiday.
    • Ask if the wait staff can surprise your date with a special dessert, or have the in-house band or musician play your date’s favorite song or a love song.[2]
  3. Order food to eat at home. Get the best of both worlds of eating out and dining in by getting takeout or delivery from your date’s favorite restaurant and eating it in the comfort and privacy of home.
Plan a Romantic Valentine's Day Date Step 3 Version 2.jpg
    • Remember that restaurants will be busy on this holiday, even for deliveries or takeout orders. Make sure to call in your order well in advance so you can pick it up or have it delivered by the time you expect.
    • Add your own romantic touches to a takeout meal, like personalized writing on a cake, a beverage that your date loves, etc. You can even ask a restaurant if they can personalize an order, even if it’s just arranging your pizza toppings into a heart![3]
  4. Surprise your date with their favorite cuisine. Find a restaurant, grocery store, or other location that has food that will remind your date of home, favorite travels, or other happy times. Think of what your date has told you is particularly special to them.
Plan a Romantic Valentine's Day Date Step 4 Version 2.jpg
    • Check specialty grocery stores, international aisles, and import stores if you’re looking for food items typically found in other countries.
    • Find a restaurant that serves your date’s favorite kind of food, look up recipes to make yourself, or even enlist the help of a family member who knows just how to make your date’s favorite dish.
  5. Get creative with how and where you eat. Make the experience of Valentine’s Day dinner an adventure in itself by doing something unique, like joining a supper club, attending dinner theater, or doing a taste test.
Plan a Romantic Valentine's Day Date Step 5 Version 2.jpg
    • Be entertained while you eat by checking out dinner theater, available in many cities, at which you watch a live performance while being served a meal.
    • Get exposed to new chefs and restaurants by joining a supper club, or create your own “food tour” by getting just one appetizer, drink, or other small item from several different restaurants in the same night.
    • Take a picnic up to a scenic hill or mountain, or to a spot that’s special to your date or significant to a time in your relationship together.
    • You can even make dinner a unique sensory experience by feeding bites of food to your blindfolded date and having him or her guess what the food is!

EditOrganizing an Activity

  1. Plan a special outing. Go see a movie, watch or play a sport, see a concert or play, or another activity your date would enjoy. Try for an activity that you don’t get to do together often, or that your date has been wanting to do for awhile.
Plan a Romantic Valentine's Day Date Step 6 Version 2.jpg
    • Check event locations for special Valentine’s Day parties, activities, or discounts to take advantage of. Choose activities perfect for two to create an intimate date.
    • Go ice skating, skiing, or another fun activity that takes advantage of the last of winter if the weather is still cold and snowy in your area.
    • If the weather is warmer, go out and do something in nature that you and your date love to do together, like hiking, camping, or just walking around town. Or try something special like sailing or a hot air balloon ride.[4]
  2. Get cozy at home. Have your date right at home, where you can have privacy, intimacy, and plenty of fun for free or very little money.
Plan a Romantic Valentine's Day Date Step 7.jpg
    • Try building a blanket fort like you did when you were a kid, playing board games or video games, watching movies or binging on a new TV series. Cuddle up and enjoy each other’s company!
    • If you planned an outdoor date that got ruined by weather, just go with the flow and bring it indoors if you can. Try an indoor picnic, for example, by laying out a blanket on the floor with some treats in a basket.[5]
  3. Surprise your date. Go for an element of surprise for any activity you have planned, even if it’s simply an evening at home. Set something up before your sweetheart comes home, or present a gift or activity to them in a creative, unexpected way.
Plan a Romantic Valentine's Day Date Step 8.jpg
    • Try a sweet scavenger hunt or romantic treasure hunt by leaving notes or clues for your date to find around the house or all over town.[6]
    • Leave a simple love letter, or a romantic note written with chocolates, candles, or flowers, for your date to find.[7]
  4. Travel somewhere new or loved. Get out of town and stay in a hotel, bed and breakfast, or go camping somewhere you’ve both never been or where you and your date love going.
Plan a Romantic Valentine's Day Date Step 9.jpg
    • You don’t have to make a big, expensive trip to a faraway place. You can even have a “staycation” where you stay someplace new within your own city! Or, check out a nearby town that you and your date have never had the chance to go to.
    • Try heading back to the place that you and your date first met, or another spot that’s romantic and significant to your relationship.

EditDeciding on a Gift

  1. Consider your date’s interests and hobbies. Think of your date’s favorite books, movies, TV shows, bands, etc. when buying a gift. Choose something your date has been waiting for or which has a special sentimental or emotional value.
Plan a Romantic Valentine's Day Date Step 10 Version 4.jpg
    • Try buying something to add to a collection if your date has a running collection of any item, like postcards, stamps, etc. Add a romantic element by making the collectible item have something to do with a place you’ve shared a kiss, had a date, or created an inside joke.
    • Try personalizing any gift with your date’s initials, yours together, or anything else that is personal to your date or your relationship. You could personalize a picture frame, a bookmark in a book your date will love, etc.
    • Think about what your date has told you they love or miss about a certain time period or place, either from earlier in your relationship, their childhood, or another special time. Try to recreate a piece of that sentimental place or time period for him or her.
  2. Make or buy a card. Write in a card to let your date know how you feel, set a romantic mood, or just make your date laugh. If you buy a card, make sure you write a personal message inside it.
Plan a Romantic Valentine's Day Date Step 11 Version 4.jpg
    • Try making a card with folded paper, markers or pens, and any other decorative elements you want to make it personal and unique to your date.
    • You can make several cards, to leave for your date to find at different places and times throughout the day for a sweet and romantic way to communicate even when you’re apart.
  3. Make your gift a fun activity. Your Valentine’s Day gift doesn’t have to be an object. Make your gift an experience that you share together, whether you travel somewhere new, see a show, or go on an adventure.
Plan a Romantic Valentine's Day Date Step 12 Version 4.jpg
    • Try giving your date the gift of a class in something they’ve always wanted to learn, like cooking, dancing, or woodworking. Your date can do the class on his or her own, or you can attend it together.[8]
    • Try ending your date on a beautiful overlook, a quaint park or garden, or someplace that is unique and special to your date or your relationship.
    • Try a “coupon book” of fun activities or sweet things that you will do for your date whenever he or she redeems each one.
  4. Go traditional with flowers, chocolates, and stuffed animals. Try the typical trifecta of Valentine’s Day gifts, which are available almost anywhere before and on the holiday, if your date enjoys those things.
Plan a Romantic Valentine's Day Date Step 13 Version 4.jpg
    • Try getting a type of chocolate that your date particularly enjoys, or another type of candy or treat they love. Personalize it with a sweet note or arrange candies into sweet words or hearts.
    • You don’t need to stick with an arrangement of flowers from the floral department. Try picking your date’s favorite wildflowers (from a permitted area), buying a different kind of plant they can enjoy planting outside or keeping indoors, or even making origami or paper flowers.[9]
    • Consider that many people enjoy a more personalized gift than what’s available at every store on Valentine’s Day, but others really do enjoy stuffed animals, flowers, and candy. It’s worth asking your date ahead of time before the holiday what they like instead of trying to guess.

EditTips

  • Always plan ahead. What you want for your date might not be available right before the holiday.

How to Use Vlookup With an Excel Spreadsheet

This wikiHow teaches you how to find a cell's corresponding information in Microsoft Excel using the VLOOKUP formula. The VLOOKUP formula is useful for finding things like employee salary values or your budget on a given date. You can use VLOOKUP in both Windows and Mac versions of Excel.

EditSteps

  1. Open your Excel document. Double-click the Excel document that contains the data for which you want to use the VLOOKUP function.
Use Vlookup With an Excel Spreadsheet Step 1 Version 5.jpg
    • If you haven't yet created your document, open Excel, click Blank workbook (Windows only), and enter your data by column.
  2. Make sure that your data is properly formatted. VLOOKUP only works with data that's organized in columns (e.g., in vertical sections), meaning that your data most likely has headers in the top row of cells but not in the far-left column of cells.
Use Vlookup With an Excel Spreadsheet Step 2 Version 5.jpg
    • If your data is organized by rows instead, you'll won't be able to use VLOOKUP to find a value.
  3. Understand each aspect of the VLOOKUP formula. The VLOOKUP formula consists of four main parts, each of which refers to a piece of information in your spreadsheet:[1]
Use Vlookup With an Excel Spreadsheet Step 3 Version 5.jpg
    • Lookup Value - The cell across from which the data that you want to look up is in. For example, if you want to look up data in cell F3, your lookup value will be in the third row of the spreadsheet.
    • Table Array - Your entire table's span from the top-left cell to the bottom-right cell (not including headers). For example, if your table starts at A2, goes down to A20, and extends over to the F column, your table goes from A2 to F20.
    • Column Index Number - The index number of the column in which the value that you want to look up is in. A column's "index number" refers to its order number; for example, in a spreadsheet that has data in columns A, B, and C, the index number of A would be 1, B would be 2, and C would be 3. The index number starts at 1 for the far-left column of data, so if your data starts in column F, its index number is 1.
    • Range Lookup - You'll normally want a precise answer for the VLOOKUP result, which can be achieved by typing in for this value. For an estimate, you can type in instead.
  4. Select an empty cell. Click a cell in which you want to store the result of the VLOOKUP formula.
Use Vlookup With an Excel Spreadsheet Step 4 Version 4.jpg
  5. Add the VLOOKUP formula tag. Type in to start the VLOOKUP formula. The rest of the formula will go between the open parenthesis and a closed one at the end.
Use Vlookup With an Excel Spreadsheet Step 5 Version 4.jpg
  6. Enter the lookup value. Find the cell in which the lookup value is written, then enter the cell's name into the VLOOKUP formula followed by a comma.[2]
Use Vlookup With an Excel Spreadsheet Step 6 Version 4.jpg
    • For example, if the lookup value is written in cell A12, you'd type into the formula.
    • You'll separate each section of the formula with a comma, but you don't need to use spaces.
  7. Enter the table array value. Find the top-left cell in which data is stored and enter its name into the formula, type a colon (), find the bottom-right cell in the data group and add it to the formula, and then type a comma.
Use Vlookup With an Excel Spreadsheet Step 7 Version 4.jpg
    • For example, if your table goes from cell A2 to cell C20, you'd type into the VLOOKUP formula.
  8. Enter the column index number. Find the index number of the column that contains the value that you want VLOOKUP to display, then type it into the formula with a comma after it.
Use Vlookup With an Excel Spreadsheet Step 8 Version 4.jpg
    • For example, if your table uses the A, B, and C columns and the data that you want is in C, you would type in here.
  9. Type in to close the formula. This will allow VLOOKUP to find the exact value in your specified column for the selected item. Your formula should look something like this:
Use Vlookup With an Excel Spreadsheet Step 9 Version 4.jpg
  10. Press . Doing so will run your formula and display the result in the formula's cell.
Use Vlookup With an Excel Spreadsheet Step 10 Version 4.jpg

EditTips

  • A common application of VLOOKUP for an inventory sheet entails plugging an item's name into the "lookup value" section and using the item's cost column as the "column index number" value.
  • To keep the cell value from changing in your VLOOKUP code when you add or adjust cells in your table, put a '$' before each letter and number of each cell name. For example, A12 would become $A$12, and A2:C20 would become $A$2:$C$20.

EditWarnings

  • Double-check your column index number before plugging it into the VLOOKUP formula, as the column index number changes depending on which column your data starts in—not the order of the columns themselves.

How to Prepare for Track

Whether you’re a seasoned runner who’s looking for the best way to approach an upcoming track meet, or you’re a beginner who just wants to make the team, you may be wondering how to prepare. If track meets or tryouts are coming up and you don’t know what to do, don’t panic. There are many ways that you can strengthen your body and mind so that you’re ready to be the best track athlete you can be.

EditIn a Hurry?

If you’ve already gotten a sports physical and athletic clothes, shoes, and equipment, the best way to prepare for track is to condition with ladder workouts 2-3 times per week and strength training workouts 1-2 times per week. Run shorter distances to improve your speed and longer distances to improve your endurance. Eat nutritious, balanced meals that contain protein, leafy greens, and carbohydrates and drink at least 6-8 glasses of water every the day. For help staying focused and positive before a meet, scroll down!

EditSteps

EditGetting Ready for Track Season

  1. Try a ladder workout. Ladder workouts, or pyramid workouts, involve starting with a short distance, gradually working up to a longer distance, and then working your way back down to the original shorter distance. For example, run , , , , and then at a medium pace with 2-3 minutes of rest in between.[1]
Prepare for Track Step 1 Version 2.jpg
    • This kind of workout can improve your endurance and pacing.
    • You can also do reverse ladder workouts, where you start at a longer distance, work your way down to a shorter distance, and then finish at the longest original distance.
    • Do this type of workout 2-3 times each week when getting into shape for track season.
  2. Run shorter distances repeatedly to improve your speed. Practice running and/or over and over again to improve your sprinting ability. Focusing on these shorter distances may help you to develop speed, pacing ability, and strength.[2]
Prepare for Track Step 2 Version 2.jpg
    • Try doing a workout where you run 4 total laps. Run continuously as you sprint the straightaways and jog the curves of each lap.
    • For best results, focus on sprinting shorter distances 2-3 times each week.
  3. Run longer distances repeatedly to improve your endurance. Focus on running longer distances over and over again to prepare your body for distance events. Run and at a time during your workouts to gain endurance.[3]
Prepare for Track Step 3 Version 2.jpg
    • Try doing a workout where you jog 5 times with a 90-second resting break between each one.
    • To successfully gain endurance, focus on running longer distances 2 or 3 times every week.
  4. Do lower body strength training once or twice a week. While running is the more obvious way to condition your body for running track, lifting weights is necessary for strengthening your muscles effectively. Incorporate lower body strength training exercises into your workouts 1-2 times each week to build up your leg muscles for running. Some exercises you can try include:[4]
Prepare for Track Step 4 Version 2.jpg
  5. Add in weekly upper body strength training. While it may not seem like it, building your upper body is also very important for running track. Your chest, shoulders, and arms should be strong for driving your arms as you run, and a strong back may help you to maintain good posture while running. Try to incorporate some of the following upper body strength training exercises into your workouts about once a week:[5]
Prepare for Track Step 5 Version 2.jpg
  6. Eat healthy, balanced meals. At track practice each day, you’ll be exerting a lot of energy. Because of this, it’s important to eat healthy meals that can effectively provide the nutrients that your body needs. Eat an energizing breakfast each day to kickstart your metabolism and a lunch that contains both protein and leafy greens. Eat foods that are high in protein and carbohydrates just after your workouts.[6]
Prepare for Track Step 6 Version 2.jpg
    • Try eating oatmeal with berries or a couple of eggs, a piece of toast, and a glass of orange juice for breakfast.
    • Consider eating a grilled chicken breast with a big salad that has carrots, cucumbers, and peppers in it for lunch.
    • Incorporate spaghetti and marinara sauce, potatoes, lean meats, and/or fava beans into your post-workout meals.
  7. Ask your coach for advice. It’s a good idea to approach the track season with a few goals in mind. Bring up your weaknesses with your coach and ask them if they can help you improve in those areas. This may help you make progress and also get closer to your coach.[7]
Prepare for Track Step 7 Version 2.jpg
    • If you’re struggling with a certain physical setback, such as pacing or hurdling form, ask your coach for advice on how to get better.
    • You can also talk to your coach about how to handle certain mental struggles, such as dealing with a big loss.

EditPreparing for a Meet

  1. Get 9-10 hours of sleep the night before. As an athlete, you’ll need to sleep more in order to give your body the proper amount of rest and recovery time. This will allow your body to perform as well as possible. Try to get a minimum of 8 hours of sleep the night before you compete in a meet. Getting 9 or 10 hours is even better.[8]
Prepare for Track Step 8 Version 2.jpg
  2. Drink at least 6-8 glasses of water throughout the day. Exerting yourself will make you sweat and lose a significant amount of the water in your body. Fill up your water bottle before starting your day and keep it on you all day long so that you can stay hydrated. Once you drink it all, refill your water bottle and continue drinking it throughout the day.[9]
Prepare for Track Step 9 Version 2.jpg
  3. Eat healthy, light snacks before the meet. If there’s a lot of time between the last meal you ate and the event you’re competing in, eat a healthy snack or 2 to keep yourself strong, focused, and energized. Go with something small and light, like a piece of fruit and/or a granola bar, to avoid getting lightheaded or upsetting your stomach.[10]
Prepare for Track Step 10 Version 2.jpg
  4. Try to keep a positive mindset. When you’re about to compete, it’s important to think optimistically. It can be easy to let the pressure get the best of you, but that will only stress you out and possibly hinder your performance. When negative thoughts of self-doubt pop into your head, give yourself positive reminders, such as:[11]
Prepare for Track Step 11 Version 2.jpg
    • You’ve prepared the best you can, and that’s what matters.
    • You are capable of doing well.
    • Everything happens for a reason.
  5. Listen to music. Listening to music can help you stay focused before the meet by tuning out the high-pressure environment and eliminating distractions. Listen to rap, rock, or dance music to get yourself positively pumped up for your event. Try listening to slower soothing music if you want to relax your mind.[12]
    Prepare for Track Step 12.jpg
  6. Jog 2 laps slowly. Before you start exerting your body, you’ll need to get your muscles loose. Start off by jogging around the track 2 times at a very slow, conversational pace.[13]
    Prepare for Track Step 13.jpg
    • 2 laps is the equivalent of .
  7. Do static stretching for at least 15 minutes. Static stretching involves holding a position for 10 seconds while staying still.[14] After you’ve done a little jogging, static stretching will help you continue to loosen up your muscles. Stretch for a total of at least 15 minutes to get your body properly stretched. Some basic static stretches you can do include:[15]
    Prepare for Track Step 14.jpg
    • Standing hamstring stretch
    • Standing quadriceps stretch
    • Side lunge stretch
    • Butterfly stretch
    • Prone calf stretch[16]
  8. Do dynamic warm up exercises for another 15 minutes. After doing some static stretches, move on to dynamic stretches, which involve movement. These have many benefits in addition to activating your muscles, including improving your range of motion and body awareness. Some dynamic stretches include:[17]
    Prepare for Track Step 15.jpg
    • Knee to chest
    • A-skips
    • B-skips
    • High knees
    • Butt kicks[18]

EditGiving Track a Try

  1. Get a sports physical. Before you start running track, go to the doctor and get a physical to make sure that it’s safe for you to run. During the physical, you’ll fill out information about your medical history and be examined physically by the doctor.[19]
    Prepare for Track Step 16.jpg
    • You may have the opportunity to get a physical done at school. If not, make an appointment with your primary care physician.
  2. Get athletic clothes, shoes, and equipment. You’ll need to get a few different things to wear and use at practices and meets. Get some athletic clothes, such as gym shorts, athletic leggings, moisture-wicking shirts, moisture-wicking socks, and sports bras, that make working out comfortable. Also get some running shoes that have proper support to prevent injuries, a water bottle, and a water-resistant duffel bag to keep everything in.[20]
    Prepare for Track Step 17.jpg
    • Also keep a sweatshirt and sweatpants in your duffel bag to wear while you warm up.
  3. Try sprinting if you can run fast. If you prefer sprinting shorter distances to jogging long ones, then sprinting events might be for you. The sprinting events in track include the dash, the dash, and the , each of which you can run on your own or in a relay with 3 other people.[21]
