How to Knit the Moss or Seed Stitch

The moss stitch is an easy stitch to work with, as it requires only the most basic knitting skills: casting on, knit stitch, purl stitch, and casting off. The moss stitch lies flat and creates a piece with an organic texture to it, but it is more even-looking and refined than the garter stitch.

Steps

Begin by casting on the desired amount of stitches desired for the width of your piece. You must choose an odd number of stitches in order to successfully knit using the moss stitch.

Knit Row #1 as follows: knit 1, purl 1. Take care to move the string of yarn from front to back & vice versa between each stitch. Repeat until there is one stitch remaining on your left needle. Knit the final stitch.

Knit Row #2 exactly as Row #1.

Knit Row #3 as follows: purl 1, knit 1. Repeat until there is one stitch remaining on your left needle. Purl the final stitch.

Knit Row #4 exactly as Row #3.

Keep in mind that since the pattern is every other, it is easy to re-orient yourself within the row by counting back, or looking at your freshly stitched stitches.

Continue until you have reached the end of your garment and cast off.
