How to Make Fried Cinnamon Apple Rings

They taste like the best donut you’ve ever had but instead of being made of yeast and flour, these donuts are made from apples.

Ingredients

Fried Apples

  • 4 large apples (sweet)

  • 1 cup flour

  • 1/4 tsp. baking powder

  • 2 tbsp. sugar

  • 1/4 tsp. salt

  • 1/8 tsp. cinnamon

  • 1 large beaten egg

  • 1 cup buttermilk

  • Vegetable oil (for frying)

Topping

  • 1/3 cup sugar

  • 2 tsp. cinnamon

Steps

  1. Combine flour, baking powder, sugar, salt and cinnamon in a large mixing bowl. Use a wire whisk to combine.

  2. In a second, small bowl combine the egg and buttermilk. Whisk together until fully combined.

  3. Mix the topping by whisking together the sugar and cinnamon in a separate bowl.

  4. Cut apples into ¼-inch thick slices.

    • Use a circle biscuit cutter in to make rings out of each slice so they end up resembling donuts.

    • Throw away centers and apple cores.

  5. Heat oil in a large pan to 350 degrees. Generally heating at medium heat will allow you to achieve this temperature.

  6. Pour the contents of the second bowl (the egg and buttermilk) into the first bowl containing the flour, etc. Whisk together well until it becomes a thick batter.

  7. Dip apple rings into batter. Do this several times until the apple is fully coated with batter. Tap ring on the side of the bowl to remove any excess batter.

  8. Place in frying pan and allow them to simmer and fry. Fry only one or two apple rings at a time, turning as the bottom browns.

  9. Transfer fried rings to a plate lined with 2 or 3 paper towels to pick up any excess oil. Only allow the rings to sit on the paper towel for a few seconds.

  10. Dredge the apple rings through the cinnamon and sugar topping, turning over and over so the entire apple is covered with cinnamon and sugar.

  11. Place apple rings on a wire rack to cool. Serve warm if possible.

Tips

  • Try this recipe with pear slices.

  • Add a little brown sugar, ginger and/or allspice to your topping mixture for extra “zing.”
