How to Use Drop Shadow in GIMP

Using Drop Shadow in Gimp can be a tough thing to figure out if you don't use it regularly or just don't use it at all. Here's how to apply the Drop Shadow feature in Gimp.

Steps

  1. Open Gimp.

  2. Create your text.

  3. Go to Filters > Light And Shadow > Drop Shadow...

    • You can change the Shadow effect as you wish, but usually the default settings do the trick.

  4. Click "OK".

  5. Tweak it as needed. Now you already have your Shadow! If you would like it darker, or more dominant, that can be changed in the Edit box.

    • See how the opacity was changed? That makes it darker. You can try experimenting with some of the settings yourself, and see how you like it.

Tips

  • Change the color of the text can give some nice effects too, so be sure to try that out too.
  • Fatter font creates a fatter shadow, so try different styles like bold and italic to give nicer effects to it.

Warnings

  • Drop shadow might interfere with some other Filters you might be using.
