How to Make a Bra Strap Bracelet

Turn your old bra straps into stylish bracelets with this TikTok trend

Have you seen those viral TikTok videos where people are fashioning their old bras into elastic bracelets for their partners to show that they’re taken? Not only is this trend cute and sentimental, but it’s also sustainable—all you need is an old bra, a needle and thread, a measuring tape, and a pair of scissors. Just cut off the adjustable part of your bra strap, sew the free end over the O-shaped ring, and give it to your S/O to wear forever. Let’s get started!

[Edit]Making Your Bra Strap Bracelet

  1. Cut the strap attached to your bra, keeping the O-shaped ring attached. Cut where the metal or plastic O-shaped ring connects to the bra, making sure the ring stays connected to one end of the adjustable strap.[1] The adjustable part of the bra will become the bra strap bracelet.

    • If your bra strap hooks to the back or front of your bra, simply remove the hook.[2]
  2. Measure your partner’s wrist and add 2 cm to get the length of your bracelet. Wrap a tape measure around your partner’s wrist to get their wrist size. Add 2 cm to your measurement so you’ll have enough room to sew the end to itself.

    • If you’d like to add decorative rings or beads to your bracelet, add 3 to 5 cm more to your measurement. You can always cut off any extra strap after you finish the bracelet.
  3. Mark the length of the bracelet from the ring to the adjustable strap. Measure from where the O-shaped ring connects to the adjustable strap and use a pencil to mark where you need to cut your bracelet. Make sure the adjustable plastic part is pushed down close to the ring, then use a pair of scissors to cut straight across the bra strap at your measurement mark.

    • If your bra has a hook instead of a ring, just wrap the bracelet around your partner’s wrist and slip the hook around the adjustable strap.[3] If you have an extra strap at the end, cut it off or tuck the end into the adjustable plastic piece.
  4. Thread the other end of the strap through the O-shaped ring. Take the free end of the bra strap and push it through the O-shaped ring. Fold the strap over the ring so that about 1 to 2 cm of the strap presses against itself.[4]

    • If your bracelet isn’t long enough, cut a non-adjustable piece of another bra strap with the ring attached. Put the free end of the new strap through the ring in your bracelet and sew the end to itself. Put the free end of the adjustable strap through the new ring and sew the end to itself.
  5. Thread your needle with any thread you’d like and tie a knot. Cut at least 6 in (15.24 cm) of any kind of thread you’d like, insert the end of the thread through the eye of the needle, and pull it through to create a tail.[5] Wrap the end of the thread around your middle finger and rub the thread between your thumb and middle finger. Pull the other end of the thread with your finger pressed down in the loop to create a knot.[6]

    • If you’re using a needle with a very small eye, push a needle threader through the eye, insert your thread into the loop, and pull the threader through.
    • To make your stitches super secure, you can also double-thread your needle by cutting at least 12 in (30.48 cm) of thread, folding it in half, and pulling both ends through the needle.
    • Cut the thread with sharp scissors and lick the end of the thread so it’s easier to guide through the needle’s eye.
  6. Stitch the end of the strap to itself with a simple straight stitch. To sew the end of the strap down, push the needle through the back of the strap so the knot sits on the inside of the bracelet. Pull the needle and thread through the strap end. Poke the needle about 2 mm from where you made the first hole and push it all the way through both strap layers.[7]

    • Repeat this stitch until you reach the end of the strap.
    • To knot it off, poke the needle through one of your stitches and pull the thread halfway through to create a loop. Push the needle through this loop and pull to create a knot.

[Edit]Decorating Your Bra Strap Bracelet

  1. Slide beads or decorative rings onto your bracelet before you sew it together. Make your bracelet match your partner’s aesthetic using decorative rings or colorful beads. To attach them, just slide them onto the free end of the bracelet before you sew the strap over the ring.

    • Try sewing a string of white pearl beads onto the top of the bracelet to create a beautiful ornate look.
    • You can also sew a single statement bead right in the middle of the bracelet, like one of these cute pink rose beads.
    • Sew these cone spike beads around your bracelet for a more edgy, punk-inspired look.
  2. Embroider your initials to show the world that your partner is taken. Use a needle and whatever colorful thread you’d like to stitch your initials onto the strap.[8] You can use a fabric pen to trace out the letters, or you can sew them freehand.

  3. Personalize the bracelet by sewing on a cute button or bow. An adorable crafting bow or a colorful button can be a great accessory to give your partner’s bracelet a little extra decoration. Sew the button (or multiple buttons) or a small bow onto the middle of the bracelet with a couple of extra stitches.[10]
