How to Cite an Online Article

When writing a scholarly or journalistic article or essay, you will need to cite your sources to prove your argument. There are formatting rules for sources contained in the works cited section following your writing. You should decide whether your paper or website is citing sources in Modern Language Association (MLA), Chicago or American Psychological Association (APA) style. Find out how to cite an online article.

Steps

Citing MLA Style

  1. Start your works cited entry with the author or authors. It should be in the format last name, first name and a period (full stop).

    • If there is more than 1 author, but no more than 3, list the authors in order that they are listed on the byline. Do not use an oxford comma when listing 3 authors.

    • If there are more than 3 authors, write the first listed author's name in proper format. Include the phrase "et al." after that name, followed by a period.

  2. Type the name of the article, in quotation marks. Capitalize all the words in the title, except the smaller articles, like "the" and "a." Place a period inside the last quotation mark.

  3. Write the name of the online journal or magazine in italics. Capitalize the words in the site title, except smaller articles. Place a comma before the next section.

    • Include the volume, if it is an online journal. Do not place a comma between the name of the site and the volume. Add the year of publication in parenthesis afterward, followed by a colon. For example, "Ideologist Online 5 (2010):"

  4. Provide the publisher name. If no publisher name is given, write "n.p."

  5. Add the date of publication. This should be in the format of day, month and year. For example, "5 Jan 2010." Be sure to include a period after this information.

  6. Type the medium of publication, or "Web." Place a period after the word.

  7. Finish with the date it was accessed online. This should be in the same format as the date of publication, with a period at the end. For example, "28 Feb. 2012."

    • There are a few additional variations if you are citing from a scholarly journal. Include the page numbers with a dash between after the publication and before the publication medium. If there aren't any page numbers, add "n. pag."

Citing Chicago Style

  1. Start your entry with the name of the author or authors. Follow the format last name, first name, initial and a period (full stop).

    • If you are using a numbered list, the author's name should be written in opposite format: first name, initial and last name, with a period.

    • If there are 2 authors, place a comma and the word "and" between the names.

  2. Add the title of the online article, next. Place it in quotation marks. Include a period inside the quotation marks.

  3. Add the name of the publication in italics. Place a comma after the name.

    • If you are citing from a scholarly journal, rather than a newspaper or magazine, type the volume number. Add the year of the journal in parenthesis, followed by a colon.

  4. Type the publication date with the format month, day, comma and year. For example, "February 16, 2012." Add a comma after the date.

    • Type in the edition, if it is a newspaper. For example, "February 16, 2012, late edition."

  5. Type in the page numbers, if applicable. Separate them with a dash.

    • Some professors prefer the addition of an access date, although it is not required by Chicago style. If requested, add the date the information was accessed, leading with the word "Accessed." For example, "Accessed January 5, 2013."

  6. Finish with the Digital Object Identifier (DOI), database name or URL. If you can find the DOI, it is preferred, otherwise use the URL or library database name. When using the DOI, write "doi" then a colon and then the number.

    • If you can only find the URL, place a period after the full URL to finish your entry. If you use the name of a database, capitalize it and place a period after it.

Citing APA Style

  1. Place the authors at the beginning of the citation entry. In APA style, you include a first initial rather than the full first name. The format should be last name, first name and period.

    • If there is more than 1 author, type the last name and first initial with period. Then, include a comma before listing the next author. Do not place an "and" in the list.

  2. Add the year of publication in parenthesis. Place a period after the parenthesis.

  3. Type the name of the article. Do not use quotation marks, italics or capitals. Place a period after the full title.

  4. Write the name of the publication. Add a comma, then the volume number. Add the issue number in parenthesis, if applicable, followed by a period.

  5. Type the date you retrieved the article. For example, "Retrieved January 18, 2010." Follow the date with a comma.

  6. Finish with the DOI or URL. Type the word "from" before the DOI or URL. Add a period to finish the citation.

Tips

  • MLA style is widely used for scholarly works in the liberal arts and the humanities. Chicago style is used commonly for published works. APA style is used for scholarly works in psychology and related fields.
