Have you ever broken a wine glass stem? There is no need to throw it away, when you can fix it, add character, and make it usable.
Steps
- Find a cork that is the most appealing to you.
- Select a drill bit that is the same size as the stem. The drill bit pictured is a carbide tipped tile or glass drill bit. A common (and much cheaper) steel twist drill bit will work much better in cork and plastic. A tube cutter, like a leather punch, would cut an even better hole, but that's beyond most household DIYers.
- Drill a hole all the way through. It doesn't have to be perfectly through the center, just straight. Drilling off-center makes it even more unique.
- Insert the broken ends of the stems into the cork half way through. Do not use any glue.
Tips
- Use a variety of corks and everyone can have a marker for their glass!
- Natural cork may dry out and shrink over time, it will need a replacement.
- Any solid cork will work: natural or plastic. The plastic corks are harder to drill, but they are long lasting, firmer, and stiffer.
- If you do not save any corks and have to go buy a bottle please let the wine breathe while you are drilling the hole.
Warnings
- A drill bit that is too small will split the cork. One that is too large will let the base fall out when you pick up the glass.
